Light brown sugar1/4 cup (50 g)
Whole milk, at room temperature3/4 cup (180 g)
Kadoya roasted sesame oil6 tablespoons (72 g)
Large eggs, at room temperature 2 (about 100 g total)
Sour cream, at room temperature3 tablespoons (42 g)
Freshly squeezed orange juice2 tablespoons (30 g)
Finely grated orange zest2 teaspoons (4 g)
Vanilla extract1/2 teaspoon (2 g)
Honey2 tablespoons (42 g)
Soft Whipped CreamFor serving
Black and White sesame seedsFor garnish

Directions (55 min)

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly grease an 8-inch round baking pan with nonstick cooking spray, line the bottom with parchment paper, and grease the parchment.

  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the granulated sugar and brown sugar, then whisk to combine.

  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the milk, Kadoya roasted sesame oil, eggs, sour cream, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla until smooth.

  4. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Whisk just until smooth and no lumps remain. Be careful not to overmix.

  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for about 40 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. Make the Honey Syrup: While the cake is baking, mix the honey with 1 tsp of warm water in a small bowl until smooth.

  7. When the cake is done, leave it in the pan and poke small holes all over the surface with a toothpick. Drizzle the honey syrup evenly over the warm cake. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes until the syrup is absorbed. Then, carefully invert the cake onto a wire rack to cool completely.

  8. Top the cooled cake with dollops of whipped cream and garnish with sesame seeds. Enjoy!
